It’s Charlie Parker. What else can I say? Maybe that this is the isn’t the best recording or pressing, but it’s decent. Perfect music for when it’s time to chill, or when the parents are over for dinner, or when I’m staring at the fish tank, or when I’m not sure what I should be doing, or when…
All I can say is, “Bird. Word.”
He’s definitely competing for a top-five slot on the best jazz artists of all time. My top three is pretty locked down by Coltrane, Miles, and Brubeck, but there’s a lot of competition after that. I’d say that I’d give the 4 to Bird with lots of people slugging it out for 5: Mingus, Monk, Tatum, Satchmo, Dizzy, Django, Stanley Jordan, Jaco, etc… I’m sure I’m forgetting someone.
(The list above is focused on solo jazz instrumentalists, excluding big band guys like Duke, Benny, Basie, et al, the killer jazz vocalists like Ella and Billie, and all the crooners like Frank, Dean, Sammy, Fred Astaire, Mel Torme, etc. since that just makes the top 5 too hard to handicap.)
I’ll give a special shout out to the Vince Guaraldi Trio for owning the cool Christmas vibe. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything else they’ve ever done, and I don’t think I need to… how could it possibly stand up?
Peace,
kp
Yeah, sweet lineup — Bird, Miles, and Roach all on one album. And I’m diggin’ the redesign. That anvil rules!
