The sleeve on this says 1988, but the labels on the record say 1987. Maybe because the single came out a little later. I like Dwight Yoakam, and I’ve already logged the LP that includes both sides of this 45, “Always Late With Your Kisses” and “1000 Miles.” These are good songs, but not my favorites from “Hillbilly Deluxe.” For the most part I’m an LP guy, and I usually only buy singles that have something I can’t get anywhere else. This one belongs to Mary. I recently read an article that the market has shifted back to singles. I know I’m old and all, but I just can’t get excited by the thought of buying singles to download. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
First you send me amazing art (double thanks again) and then you taunt me by dissing downloaded music. You know I love vinyl, and complete albums, but your heavy focus on albums makes me sad.
There are good songs, and there are good albums. There are artists who have one good song, and artists who have one good album. There are also artists with many good singles and artists with many good albums.
However, there are also artists who really have only one song that I want to hear. I bought “Radar Love” by the Golden Earrings on iTunes, I downloaded “Dancin’ in the Moonlight” by King Harvest on Napster for our wedding (before they got sued and shut down and stuff).
[On a relevant side note, I already owned the King Harvest 45, but it’s a bitch to rip vinyl to mp3.]
Can you name any other songs by Golden Earring and King Harvest? Because I sure as hell can’t.
My point? Stay with me:
1. I love vinyl. (And all its analog goodness.)
2. I love albums. (And album art, and musical cohesion.)
3. I like good songs by bands who only have one good song.
4. I love getting music when I want it, where I want it.
5. There are some bands who only have one song worth hearing.
6. I love downloading free music from bands who freely offer it, especially when I wouldn’t have had any other opportunity to hear them. (see: college radio, http://creativecommons.org, http://jonathancoulton.com)
Free your mind, and your ass will follow….
Peace,
Keith
p.s. Thanks again for the incredible portrait of Max.
