Inca Babies -- Evil Hour

  • Artist: Inca Babies
  • Title: Evil Hour
  • Year: 1988
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 5
  • Owner: Tracy
  • Acquired: 1988 – Promo at our store RIP Records in Norfolk, VA.

I was thinking this Inca Babies record, “Evil Hour”, sounded familiar in some way, but I wasn’t sure why. I thought maybe there was some milder Birthday Party thing happening, but that seemed like a lazy comparison. Then, I read this article about the Inca Babies at Trouser Press. Turns out, I’m not lazy. It looks like this was their last release and apparently they had started finding their groove, but overall this record wasn’t as exciting as I remembered.

Update: Inca Babies’ new site is up and running, and they have a new “best of” called Plutonium out on Cherry Red Records.

You’re right it isn’t a great record, previous work was better in my opinion. I liked the earlier stuff because it was louder and generally punkier.

Yes we did sound like the Birthday Party, but our heros were the Gun Club, the Cramps, Gene Vincent and Link Wray. How many times do you go a see a band and say to your neighbour Oh don’t they sound like . . .
You could say that Primal Scream sound like the Stones, you could say that early Stones sounded like Muddy Waters or Chuck Berry. I think they were just finding their sound. As for Primal Scream, they rock regardless of sounding like the stones. Anyway thanks for reviewing the Album. Incedently there is a Best of (no really) CD out on Cherry Red called Plutonium. Regards Harry S.

Wow! A comment from someone in the band. I’ll have to check out the other stuff now. Believe it or not, “Inca Babies” is one of the more common search terms leading people to this site.

    Hi there,
want to let you know that I posted some early Inca Babies records on my blog. Ripped them from my own vinyl copies. Seems that Inca Babies are not forgotten at all!
I will add the link to the official site to my post. Never knew until now that there is one.

Band member number 2 up for comment!! Being lost for some years in the Kent countryside for some time and writing songs a plenty, I have had time to reflect so I will shove on my cadillac shaped rose coloured spectacles and add a comment or two.

I joined the band in time to record both Opium Den and Evil Hour playing guitar. The earlier material (before I joined the band) was very slash and bash and very much captured a moment in Manchester, The bands re-jig of Harry onto lead vocal was a natural progression that kept the bands colour, but changed it’s flavour.

Evil hour blasted out live and was as dark and grim as my memory probably. Evil Hour for me was the most polished and well recorded album, which is probably what puts some crackle and grunge lovers off. Still, it was a great album to play live, so put that in your Trouser press and steam it!
