Good ol’ Slash Records. This is a compilation of music from some of the great bands on Slash from 1979-1983. The presence of The Blasters and X (two songs each) is what pushes this rating up to 8. Another tasty bit is Fear’s “New York’s Alright If You Like Saxophones.” From the lyrics on that song, and others, it’s hard to tell if they’re homosexuals, homophobes, or just having fun making uptight people mad. Fear was always good for a little controversy.
Here’s a funny story about Fear’s appearance on Saturday Night Live, at Wikipedia.
Artists include:
- The Blasters
- Gun Club
- Rank and File
- Violent Femmes
- X
- Fear
- Germs
- The Dream Syndicate
My girlfeind in 1982 gave me this tape and then she cheated on me. I still have the tape and she is now a politian in San Frnsico. Life is crazy.
Does anyone have this on a CD to send me?
[…] Slash records release, what a cool label that was. Every punk in my high school had a copy of that Slash Records: The Early Sessions compilation on cassette tape. I’m pretty sure I’ve told this story already. I’m […]
This was/is an amazing album that has really stood up well for 30 years. It was pretty much my introduction to the alternative music scene.
Over the years I was fortunate enough to see Rank and File, Violent Femmes, X and The Dream Syndicate.
I owned this on cassette back in the day. In my case, it’s the only thing that I’ve owned for most of these bands (I did have an X album at one point). In addition to the songs you mentioned, “Sex Beat” and “Caught in My Eye” are outstanding, and the other songs are good. Now I have to see if Spotify has it…
