U2 -- The Joshua Tree

U2 -- The Joshua Tree

  • Artist: U2
  • Title: The Joshua Tree
  • Year: 1987
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 10
  • Owner: Mary and Tracy, two copies
  • Acquired: Mary? Tracy’s copy is a promo.

The Joshua Tree by U2 came out in 1987. That’s the same year I met my wife. Our 17th wedding anniversary was yesterday. Instead of doing something special with my lady I spent the entire day finishing a web project I had committed to do. Fortunately, to know me is to love me and she continues to put up with that kind of silliness. Of course, I love her completely. We’re just getting started.

In addition to my sentimentality about the year 1987, I have other reasons to really like The Joshua Tree. I didn’t enjoy the recent playing of The Unforgettable Fire that much. So, I was not expecting to love this one. And I was wrong. This album is incredible. I even like the hits despite hearing them thousands of times. I have to wonder if there was an inside joke around the first two songs being “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” My favorites are “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Red Hill Mining Town.”

Another memory I have attached to this album is from the live tour. I didn’t go see the band this time, but I did sell tickets. I was working at a small chain called Mother’s Records in Hampton. We sold tickets there. U2 came to the Hampton Coliseum in December for two highly anticipated shows. People were coming at me from everywhere in an attempt to score tickets. I remember a guy from the shoe store down the way trying to bribe me with something like $50. The concert promoter made sure that kind of thing would not happen. They sent agents to stand watch over every ticket machine until the shows sold out. Even our employees at the store who wanted tickets ended up sleeping in the long line overnight. I had just recently been made Assistant Manager at this store and for some reason the higher-ups thought it was a good idea to let me be the manager to open the store the morning the tickets went on sale.

I got to work early and saw the fattest, longest line of would-be ticket holders line I have ever seen. As I walked closer to the store some people in line began to recognize me and started yelling and clapping. I felt like I was the rock star, but that didn’t last long. Once tickets went on sale and other stores opened it seemed every other store in the mall was complaining to mall security and the police about the chaos. I was only 21 years old and really had no clue what everyone expected me to do to solve the problem. In the meantime, every time the promoter’s watchdog turned his head or talked to someone the teenage staff at the ticket counter were printing extras and squirreling them away as fast as they could. I think it took about two hours to sell out, but it seemed like an eternity. The next year the mall wouldn’t renew the store’s lease, primarily because of that one day with the rowdy U2 fans.

A few weeks later Mary and I went on our first official date. It was not a rock concert.

U2 — Pride (In the Name of Love) – Japan

U2 -- Pride (In the Name of Love) - Japan

  • Artist: U2
  • Title: Pride (In the Name of Love) – Japan
  • Year: 1985
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 8
  • Owner: Mary
  • Acquired: 1985 – Probably Tower Records in DC
  • Keeper: Yes

Based on the track listing, according to Wikipedia, we have “Version 3” of this “Pride” 12 inch by U2. But that page doesn’t mention anything about it being a Japanese promo, which it is.

Side 1
“Pride (In the Name of Love)” (Single Version)
“Boomerang I” (Instrumental)
“Boomerang II”

Side 2
“11 O’Clock Tick Tock” (Long Version)
“Touch”

The “Boomerang” songs sound more like Duran Duran than what you would expect from U2. I like them. “11 O’clock” is a previously unreleased version. I don’t recognize “Touch” at all; it sounds very early. We’re going to keep this one. It has some interesting extras, a great package, and it appears to be a “collector’s item.”

U2 -- The Unforgettable Fire

  • Title: The Unforgettable Fire
  • Year: 1984
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 7
  • Owner: Mary
  • Acquired: When? Used at Plan 9 in Richmond, VA.
  • Keeper: Yes

Do the hits getting any bigger? I don’t think so. Maybe that’s why I was already getting tired of these guys by their fourth LP. U2 was constantly on the radio at this point, especially “Pride (In the name of love).” Of course, there are some other hits from The Unforgettable Fire. My favorite is “Wire.” At this point their earnestness and Bono’s breathy vocals were wearing on me. I did go see them on this tour, even though I never bought the album, probably because all my friends were going. This time they were at an arena and I had to pay a whopping $12.50. I think Lone Justice opened up.

  • Year: 1983
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 8

  • Keeper: Yes

Another one of Mary’s U2 12 inch records. It seems like we’ll never get through them, and I think there are even more 7 inch singles on the shelves. Of course, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is great song, I can’t tell what is different about the mix. The remixes of “New Year’s Day” and “Two Hearts Beat as One” are more obvious and sound interesting, I guess. I mentioned before that I got to see them on this tour, and before War had become a huge hit. This time I found my ticket stub for the show at Chrysler Hall. The place only holds 2500 people and I’m glad I got to see them in such a small and great-sounding venue. And check out the price on the ticket, $8.50!

  • Year: 1983
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 6

  • Keeper: Maybe

This is another record to set aside for our ’80s dance night party coming soon to a club near you. Of course we like U2, and of course “New Year’s Day” and “Two Hearts Beat as One” are great songs. François Kevorkian remixed these hits for the US market. I like to call them the “Dr. Death Dance Mixes”, but maybe that was a different Kevorkian. Anyhow, they’re neither offensive or special.

“Under a Blood Red Sky” is a great live record by U2. Mary gives it a rating of “9” even though she thinks Bono enjoys signing a little too much(?). Based on the enthusiastic-sounding crowd I think these guys will be big one day. I just know it.

You can read more about this record at Wikipedia.

  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 7
  • Owner: Mary

This four song 12 inch was recorded live at the Paradise Theatre in Boston, March 1981. U2 performs “Fire”, “J. Swallow”, “11 O’clock Tick Tock”, and “The Ocean.” It sounds good; they sound really good. The cover is the same on both sides. Not much else to report. This one is for-fans-only.

U2 — War

U2 -- War

U2 -- War

  • Artist: U2
  • Title: War
  • Year: 1983
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 10
  • Owner: Tracy / Mary
  • Acquired: 1983 – Mother’s Records in Hampton, VA.
  • Keeper: Yes

This was the most excited I ever was about getting a U2 album. I remember buying “War” and The Ramones’ “Subterranen Jungle” on the same day. The guy at the store made a point to tell me how good the U2 record was, but he didn’t seem interested in The Ramones at all. He had a serious mullet; that’s all I’m saying.

I got to see U2 on the War tour. It was at the smallish (2500 seats?) Chrysler Hall. After the success of this record they would only play big joints. Pylon was the opening act and I really enjoyed their show despite some morons who had to keep heckling the somewhat overweight singer.

U2 — October

U2 -- October

U2 -- October

  • Artist: U2
  • Title: October
  • Year: 1981
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 7
  • Owner: Mary
  • Acquired: 1981 – Unknown origin.
  • Keeper: Yes

Led Zepplin had “Presence” and U2 has “October.” By that I mean these are more “challenging” records that any decent band will eventually put out, but for U2 they did it on their second release. It’s an interesting album with only one song that got any real radio attention, “Gloria.” Was there another one? I give ’em their propers for effort, but I don’t find “October” as engaging or exciting as “Boy.”

U2 — Boy

U2 -- Boy

U2 -- Boy

  • Artist: U2
  • Title: Boy
  • Year: 1980
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 8
  • Owner: Mary
  • Acquired: 1980 – Unknown origin.
  • Keeper: Yes

1980?!? That’s a long time ago. I remember immediately liking “I Will Follow” when I first heard Bono singing “If you walk away, walk away…” But if you had told me then that U2 would still be making music worth listening to decades later I doubt I would have believed you.

For some reason I never bought the record. I’m glad Mary owns almost everything they’ve ever done. I’m pretty sure my friend Jeff Arthur introduced me to them.

Of course “Boy” is a great record and it still sounds modern. It’s hard to believe that U2 is now “classic rock.”
